Why Tennessee Should Legalize Marihuana

Tennessee should legalize the marihuana version of cannabis for many reasons including the benefits of creating a nascent industry, providing medical benefits, and considering the historical lesson of alcohol prohibition.

Tennessee Should Legalize Cannabis

Creating a nascent marihuana industry in Tennessee has the potential to bring a variety of economic benefits. A regulated marihuana market could yield increases in jobs, investment, tax revenue, and business innovation. Revenue from marihuana taxes can be allocated to public programs and services. Furthermore, legal marihuana can reduce costs associated with prosecuting and enforcing drug laws.

Marihuana also has significant medicinal properties that could benefit the lives of Tennesseans. Research has shown that marihuana has therapeutic value in treating many medical conditions, including cancer, multiple sclerosis, PTSD, opioid addiction, and anxiety. By legalizing marihuana, Tennessee can offer citizens much-needed relief from the suffering caused by these and other medical conditions.

Historically, alcohol prohibition in the United States did not work. Alcohol prohibition created a black market, enabling criminals and gangsters to become wealthy and powerful. It also fostered a culture of crime and violence. Furthermore, alcohol is a highly addictive gateway drug that can lead to the abuse of other substances.

By comparison, cannabis is different.

Marihuana vs Alcohol

While it is inherently less harmful and less addictive than alcohol, it has remained illegal for decades without the same negative consequences that alcohol prohibition caused. The legalization of marihuana can help to bring an end to the war on drugs and the associated social turmoil and cost.

The legalization of marihuana can bring substantial benefits to the citizens of Tennessee. Regulations can be implemented to ensure responsible production, distribution, and consumption of marihuana. This, in turn, will spur economic growth, generate revenue, and provide medical relief.

Furthermore, the historical lessons of alcohol prohibition should remind us that prohibition does not work.
